Project Description

Surtseyan structure in which we can observe wet and dry pyroclastic series with plenty of pyroclastic structures and coastal erosion processes. The eruption began with the emission of humid basal pyroclastic series which evolved at the end of the eruption into drier forms. This structure was generated as a result of the continuing collapse of eruptive columns forming a cone of tufa (tuff cone). In the deposits, you can find typical elements of hydro-magmatic eruptions like  the lapilli accretion, cross stratifications, dunes and anti-dunes, channels, structures with load deformations, etc. Subsequently, nearly half of the structure was dismantled by erosion followed by a strombolian eruption whose pyroclastic and lava flows lined the hydro-magmatic structure. Currently, the Golfo has a greenish inner lagoon produced by algae, separated from the sea by a rope fence known as La Laguna de Los Clicos or Charco Verde.
This geosite is of major volcanological interest. Additional geomorphological and stratigraphic interest also. It is a place of particular beauty due to the fact that pyroclastic deposits have altered their original colour as a result of palagonitization processes, which results in the current yellowness mainly affecting the bottom of the deposits. The observation conditions are good from the scenic view points.
